— The Story

The largest canyon in the solar system.

No river cut me. I am a crack. As the Tharsis volcanoes bulged the crust to my west, the ground stretched until it failed and dropped between parallel faults — a wound that widened over billions of years into the largest canyon in the solar system.

I run more than 4,000 kilometres along the Martian equator, spanning nearly a fifth of the way around the planet; laid across the United States I'd reach ocean to ocean. The Grand Canyon is water's masterpiece; I was made by the planet simply pulling apart. Mariner 9 found me in 1971 and we have never sent anyone close.

The contour on this piece is real Martian relief, drawn from NASA MOLA laser altimetry — a place no human has seen with their own eyes, to scale.

Not carved by a river. Torn open as the crust pulled apart.
