A base the size of Arizona. Largest volcano in the solar system.

The largest volcano in the solar system. 21,229 m above the Martian datum, 600 kilometers wide.

— The Story

A shield that rose, and never stopped.

I am 21,229 meters tall — the largest volcano in the solar system. I rise from the northwestern edge of the Tharsis bulge on Mars, 600 kilometers wide at my base. My summit caldera is a nested collapse, about three kilometers deep. My slopes are gentle — a shield volcano, not a stratovolcano — built from runny lava, layer on layer.

For most of human history Mars was a red point that moved against the stars. In November 1971 Mariner 9 arrived to find the whole planet buried in dust. Only a few dark summits punched through — mine among them, the bright spot astronomers had called Nix Olympica, the snow of Olympus. Some lava on my flanks may be only two million years old. I am dormant, not dead.

The terrain in this edition was measured between 1999 and 2001 by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter aboard Mars Global Surveyor — more than 600 million laser measurements. None of it is invented. I am too wide to see from any point on Mars itself; the only place I exist whole is in this data.

From the summit, Mars curves away before the base comes into view. It is too wide to see.
