JULY 20, 1969 · 20:17 UTC

Neil Armstrong. Buzz Aldrin. 21 hours 36 minutes on the surface.

Landing site of the first crewed Moon landing — Sea of Tranquility, July 20, 1969.

— The Story

The first ground we ever stood on.

This is the only terrain in the archive that is a moment, not a place. At 20:17 UTC on July 20, 1969, the lander Eagle touched the Sea of Tranquility and, for the first time, human beings rested on ground that was not Earth. The coordinates matter less than the date.

Neil Armstrong stepped off the ladder nearly seven hours later; Buzz Aldrin followed nineteen minutes after. Their single walk lasted 2 hours 31 minutes and never strayed more than about 60 meters from the lander — their tracks cover less area than a city block, on a world a quarter-million miles from every other person alive but one. They carried home 21.55 kilograms of the Moon and left the first human footprints on another world. With no wind to erase them, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed their paths in 2012.

The contour on this piece is the real ground at Tranquility Base, drawn from NASA LOLA laser altimetry — the place we first stood, to scale.

The one terrain defined not by geology, but by a single moment.
