— The Story

Sand that was lava.

This sand was liquid rock a geological breath ago. Where lava meets the ocean on the Kaʻū coast, the cold detonates it on contact — the survey term is thermal granulation — and the surf grinds the black glass into a beach that is, in effect, still being manufactured. The volcano hasn't stopped, so the island is still growing.

Fresh springs rise through the bay floor, and the Hawaiian name remembers them: Punaluʻu, roughly "spring dived for," from the days people free-dived with gourds to gather fresh water from beneath the salt. Green turtles haul out on the black sand, and a handful of the critically endangered hawksbills — of which fewer than 80 nest in all the islands — choose this one shore.

The contour on this piece is the real coastline, drawn from public altimetry — the edge where the island is still being made.

The sand was molten rock a geological instant ago.
