— The Story

A basin that dropped, and filled with snowmelt.

I am 1,645 feet deep — the second-deepest lake in the United States. I sit at 6,225 feet in the Sierra Nevada, where California meets Nevada. I am not a glacial scoop or a volcanic crater. I am a graben: a block of crust that dropped between two faults two million years ago, while the mountains on either side rose. I have been filling with snowmelt ever since.

For some eight thousand years the Washoe lived along my shore and called me Dáʔaw — the lake. In 1844, Frémont and Preuss climbed a snowbound ridge and were the first to map me. I hold thirty-nine trillion gallons — enough to flood California fourteen inches deep — and I am far too deep to freeze.

The terrain in this edition is my real floor — mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1998 with sixty million sonar soundings, shoreline to the deepest dark. None of it is invented. I am the largest alpine lake in North America, and one of the oldest on Earth.

You can see sixty feet down through the water — and the floor is still twenty-six times deeper.
