↓ 1,645 FT DEEP

Second-deepest lake in the US, famous for its clarity.

An alpine lake in a Sierra Nevada fault basin. 1,645 feet deep, two million years old — the second-deepest lake in the United States.

— The Story

A basin that dropped, and filled with snowmelt.

I am 1,645 feet deep — the second-deepest lake in the United States. I sit at 6,225 feet in the Sierra Nevada, where California meets Nevada. I am not a glacial scoop or a volcanic crater. I am a graben: a block of crust that dropped between faults while the mountains on either side rose. About two million years ago, lava and mudflows sealed my northern outlet, and I have been filling with snowmelt ever since.

People have come to my shore for at least nine thousand years. The Washoe call me Da ow — the lake. In 1844, Frémont and Preuss climbed a snowbound ridge and became the first Euro-Americans on record to see me. I hold thirty-nine trillion gallons — enough to flood California fourteen inches deep — and I am far too deep to freeze.

The terrain in this edition is my real floor — mapped by U.S. Geological Survey sonar in 1998 with more than 65 million soundings, the shallows added by airborne lidar in 2000. None of it is invented. I am the largest alpine lake in North America.

In 1968 you could see 102 feet down. The floor is still sixteen times deeper.
