REEF DEPTH 6 FT · HEAVY WATER OVER SHALLOW REEF

Waves break over a reef about 6 ft down that shapes the barrel.

Hawaiian shallow-reef break on Oʻahu's North Shore — site of the Triple Crown.

— The Story

The wave is shaped by the reef.

This wave is built by something no one in the water can see: a flat shelf of reef just below the surface. The swell arrives from deep ocean, hits that shallow reef all at once, and has nowhere to go but up and over — folding into the barrel that made my name and, on the wrong day, breaks bones on the same rock that makes the shape.

I break off Ehukai Beach on Oʻahu's North Shore, biggest from November to March on a northwest swell. Every winter since the first Pipe Masters in 1971, the best surfers in the world have come to be measured against me, and every winter the reef takes its due.

The contour on this piece is the real terrain that shapes the wave — reef and seabed drawn from public bathymetry, to scale.

The barrel is built by a reef sitting six feet under the surface.
