35,157 FT DOWN · DEEPEST KNOWN POINT ON EARTH

Deeper than Everest is tall. Sunlight has never reached the floor.

The deepest known point in Earth's oceans — Challenger Deep, in the western Pacific.

— The Story

The deepest point on the planet.

The deepest place on Earth stayed effectively unmeasured until 1875, when a British survey ship lowered a weighted rope and struck bottom at 4,475 fathoms — five miles down. Drop Everest into me and its peak still drowns more than a mile beneath the surface.

I was not carved; I was pulled under, where the Pacific plate slides beneath the Mariana plate and drags the seafloor down with it. At my floor the pressure passes a thousand bar — around eight tons on every square inch. The first two men to reach it, Piccard and Walsh, descended in 1960 in a steel sphere named Trieste, sat twenty minutes in the dark, and rose. For the next fifty-two years, no one followed.

The contour on this piece comes from the GEBCO 2026 grid at 15 arc-seconds — roughly 460 meters to a cell. Over Challenger Deep the deepest cell in that grid reads 10,716 m — 35,157 ft, the figure on the archival print. A grid this coarse cannot reach the floor of a trench shaped like a V; dedicated measurements run deeper, and the tee carries one of them: 10,925 m (van Haren et al., 2017). What you have is the trench as the public grid records it, to scale, with nothing smoothed by hand.

Drop Everest in and its peak would still sit a mile underwater.
