— The Story

The roof of the lower 48.

The first people to stand on the highest ground in the country weren't an expedition. They were three fishermen from the Owens Valley — Begole, Johnson, Lucas — who walked up my easier western slope on a clear day in August 1873 and found nobody had bothered before them. The roof of the lower 48 was never guarded. It was just far away.

I reach 14,505 feet, the southern crown of the Sierra Nevada, with 10,075 feet of clear air beneath my summit. The trail from Whitney Portal still asks for 22 miles and 6,100 feet of climbing — the same granite, the same thin air those three walked into with no idea what they'd find.

The line on this piece is my actual contour, pulled from USGS laser altimetry at the resolution the survey flies. Where the rock turns, the line turns.

Three fishermen reached the top in 1873. The trail still gains six thousand feet.
