↑ 14,259 FT · KEYHOLE ROUTE

The only fourteener in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The Keyhole. The Narrows. The summit nobody forgets.

— The Story

Not a hike. A route.

The Park Service won't call my Keyhole a hike. It's a climb, and it earns the word route, not trail. The Keyhole strings together the Ledges, the Trough, the Narrows and the Homestretch — 15 miles round trip and about 5,100 feet of climbing where a slip has consequences — and the Park Service tells you to start no later than 3 a.m., because the real danger isn't the rock, it's the afternoon lightning that stalks June, July and August.

I'm the highest summit in Rocky Mountain National Park at 14,259 feet, the northernmost of the Rockies' fourteeners. John Wesley Powell's survey party made the first recorded ascent in 1868 — the same one-armed Powell who, a year later, would run the uncharted Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

The line on this piece is my real contour, drawn from USGS 3DEP elevation data. The Keyhole is in there, if you know where to look.

The Park Service puts it plainly: the Keyhole Route is not a hike.
