— The Story

A half mile of chains.

You earn the last half mile of me by holding a chain bolted into bare sandstone while the ground falls away on either side of a spine barely wide enough to stand on. Since 2022 you need a permit even to try — not for difficulty, but because too many people wanted to stand somewhere that exposed.

I'm a fin of Navajo sandstone driven into the floor of Zion Canyon. The trail to my base climbs through Walter's Wiggles — 21 switchbacks carved into the cliff in 1926 — before the railings end and the chains begin. Everything memorable about me happens in the stretch most trails would never let you walk.

The contour on this piece is my real edge, drawn from USGS altimetry. The drop is to scale.
